I created The Pole Story because of an ongoing feeling that my work for my MA in Somatic Psychology was somehow incomplete.  While researching my thesis (called “The Embodiment of Female Sexuality Through Dance”), I realized that I was only scratching the surface of issues related to the pole dancing movement.  I found myself continuing to write and read long after graduation and my thesis became the foundation for a much larger exploration.

I wanted to write about all the different elements of the pole dancing movement in a way that was accessible to nearly everyone.  As I started talking to people in my pole dancing community about what I was doing, it became clear that there was a need for words that could explain our movement both to each other and to others.  It also became clear to me that there is a tremendous amount of work that needs to be done to educate the public about what pole dancers do and why it has value.  It has become my mission to give a voice to my community’s experiences and to educate the general public about the physical, emotional and psychological benefits of pole dancing. 

I am equally interested in how pole dancing fits into the much larger framework of female sexuality.  Certainly part of the appeal of pole dancing, as well as some of the controversy that surrounds it, is its erotic nature.  This eroticism has created a stigma around pole dancing that has led some dancers to distance themselves from the inherent sensuality of the movement.  It has also made pole dancing extremely hard to mainstream.

In the Pole Story, I attempt to tackle these complicated issues and provide dancers a way through some of the challenges and prejudice they may face because of their decision to dance sensually.  I bring into light the healing aspects of this sensual, erotic based movement.  This is a place for newcomers as much as it is for the seasoned pole dancer.  It’s a place where you can ask questions, get tips and advice and hopefully learn something new about the beautiful, amazing, erotic art of pole dancing.
